Building A Carved Top Set Neck Guitar - The "Fifty Nine"

This is my nod to the Gibson Les Paul - Built in the same style of the late 1950's Les Paul's specifically. The long tenon, hide glues and fish glue, the binding nibs, the holly veneer headstock plate, the Cherry pore filler and Aniline Dyes and Nitrocellulose lacquer finish. I've deviated a bit and used Stainless steel frets and a scarf joint in the neck for added strength. I also moved the toggle switch down and went with a master tone. I hope you enjoy.

How To Make A Guitar Pickguard
Переглядів 159 тис.8 років тому
A quick demonstration of me using a template to cut a guitar pickguard. Be aware that all holes may not line up perfectly with your existing body when cutting your own guard,. Some imported guitars are not always 100% compatible. The perimeter mounting holes may be in slightly different locations. Not a big deal if you don't mind plugging and redrilling 3 to 4 holes.

Don't you need a protective lacquer coat first before the filler??? I used dark brown timber mate on my first experience finishing Ash, nicely popping the grain. I forgot to shoot it with lacquer first, it stained the white grain all to hell, so I had to sand it for days to get it out. The second try I gave it a nice thick protective lacquer coat first and it worked great. If I do it again I'll certainly use Timber Mate again - and NOT forget the protective coat. Good stuff.

I know this is an eleven year old video but I just have to say what an amazing artist Mr. Fletcher is. Watching him shape that neck makes it look so easy that I feel like I could do it myself. Oh, sure, I get it that when I actually try it, mine won't look anything at all like his or even like a guitar neck but I can always use file dust as fire starter powder and the neck wood in the wood stove this winter. So I might actually try it.
